8 Must-Haves for Every Bachelor Pad

Shaker Run - Monday, August 13, 2018

Whether this is your first apartment, or you’ve rented before, it could be hard to determine which furnishings are essential and what the focal points should be. We’ve put together a list of the top 8 things every bachelor/bachelorette pad should have!

1. Bedroom Furniture: This sounds like a no-brainer but for many of us, especially right after college, we don’t have quality pieces we’d like to take with us as we move further into adulthood. What does this entail? A proper bedframe, maybe one with a headboard and footboard, a nightstand or two, and of course a quality dresser.
2. Matching Bedding: Matching sheets, pillowcases, and coordinating blanket, quilt, or comforter will help give your bedroom the finished look it deserves.
3. An Entry with Purpose: The entry for your apartment serves more of a purpose than we realize. Many of us only see it as an entry way or an exit, but it’s a place where we tend to drop our keys for the night or kick off our shoes. Adding a coat rack, bench to store our shoes under, and something to hold our keys gives the entryway the purpose it deserves.
4. Kitchenware: Mixing and matching isn’t always a bad thing, but it’s best to put thought into your place settings. Your kitchenware doesn’t have to be expensive, but it is something you will have for a long time, so purchasing quality pieces is always a bonus!
5. Artwork: Empty walls can be kind of boring; hanging a piece of art gives personality to your space and can say a lot of your personal style. So give it some thought and make your space feel like a home for yourself as well as your guests!
6. A Bathroom Oasis: Much like your bedroom, your bathroom deserves a bit of your attention. Matching, quality, towels – hand towels, washcloths, and bath towels are a great start! Then incorporate colors or patterns with a shower curtain and floor mat. It’s also a great idea to include a nice dish for your hand soap, and an attractive tray or caddy for to keep your grooming products tidy.
7. Window Treatments: The residents of Shaker Run Apartments have the luxury of enjoying lots of natural light with our windows, and what really helps bring the room together are window treatments. This works especially well if you coordinate the treatments with an accent rug, arm chair, or couch.
8. Plants: Incorporating plants into your space adds, well, life to your home. Flowers, succulents, herbs, all create their own level of eye appeal that so many of us desire for our homes.

Now that you have a list of the essentials, fill your home at Shaker Run with other accessories and furnishings that fit your personality!

Your New Decluttering Mantra

Shaker Run - Friday, August 03, 2018

Whether you live in an apartment or a home, clutter is bound to happen, especially if you live in the same place for a long duration and acquire more items. What you don’t want happening is acquiring so much that it begins to clutter your space and gives you an overwhelming sensation. To avoid this, we suggest adopting a decluttering mantra: best, favorite, necessary. Keep reading to learn how to incorporate it into your life.

Decluttering Mantra

These three little words encourage us to only keep the best, your favorite, and what’s necessary. The goal to keep in mind is to create space and to only hold on to the items that serve a purpose and fulfill our lives. While this mantra can be put to the test in multiple spaces in your home; here are a few ways we suggest.

Baskets, Boxes, Bins: Many of us fall victim to holding on to empty gift baskets assuming we’ll use them again but we rarely do. The same can be said for empty storage bins. Put the “best and favorite” words to work! You don’t need to save every basket, box, or bin that has crossed your path. Save only the ones that are in the best condition or look the nicest. Assuming you hold on to a few storage bins, try condensing the baskets and boxes to fit neatly within a bin or two!

Kitchen: The kitchen is an easy space to use the best, favorite, necessary mantra. For one reason or another we tend to accumulate duplicates of tools and gadgets – spatula, zester, measuring cups, the list goes on and on! Keep only the items you find completely necessary – two spatulas instead of five, for example. Then, assuming they’re in good condition put the rest in a box for donation.

Kid Items: It might feel impossible, but you can part ways with old papers from days gone by, clothing that no longer fits, or toys that are past their prime. Much like the kitchen items, if the toys or clothing are in decent condition, they can be donated! No kids at home? Go through your personal items. We’re all guilty of holding on to a magazine or two insisting we’ll read it again.

If you’ve tried this mantra and still find yourself tripping over clutter, but the items have found themselves in your “necessary” category then it might be time for a bigger apartment to call your home! With multiple floor plans and sizes to choose from, Shaker Run Apartments will have something for you. Contact us to schedule your tour today!

What other areas of your home can you see yourself putting your mantra to work in?

5 Ways to Have a Chic Apartment

Shaker Run - Monday, July 02, 2018
Have you ever stepped foot into someone’s home and felt in awe of their style and their space? Use these people as a learning experience! More often than not, they may have paid someone to help design the interior of their space. You don’t have to pay someone to dress your space, unless you want to; use our tips to have a home that you love!

5 Ways to Make an Apartment Chic

1. Negative Space: While designing your space, resist the urge to fill every corner with a design element. Too many elements or design features could make the space look crowded or overwhelming. Pick a design element and allow it to shine!
2. Focal Point: A statement piece or focal point automatically captures your guests’ attention. It can be a bold lamp, area rug, or wall art can either make or break a room. It is wise to choose one piece that will pull the room together.
3. Incorporate Texture: While putting together a room, items with texture tend to go overlooked but they actually add interest and depth for the area. A room that has a lot of smooth surfaces can oftentimes feel cold or lifeless, while going in the opposite direction may feel like the space lacks serenity. It is essential to find a balance that work for you!
4. Classic Pieces: A well-designed space will also incorporate classic pieces which stand the test of time. Coffee tables, arm chairs, or end tables are designed to be used in our homes for long periods of time. While designing your space, keep an eye out for classic pieces that will pull your design efforts together, but will last throughout the years.
5. Make it Yours: To truly make a home yours, it should have your personal touch with items such as photos or memorabilia from something you have experienced. Much like with textures, moderation is key. Displaying items that mean something to you helps to convey your personality and sense of style which adds to the chicness of your home.
If your apartment leaves you feeling uninspired and you aren’t sure how to give it the chic design you desire, it’s time for new surroundings! If this sounds like you, take a look at our amenities all of our residents have the luxury of enjoying. We also encourage you to schedule a tour of our community, we’re certain to have something you will love!

3 Ways to Spend Less Money

Shaker Run - Monday, June 11, 2018

Many of us are guilty of impulse buys, whether it’s wandering aimlessly around your favorite store, or grabbing an afternoon cup of coffee. These impulse buys and treats quickly add up and could become an issue. Take our 3 tips into consideration so you can begin saving money!

3 Ways to Spend Less Money

1. Unsubscribe: It’s hard to cut ties, but, when it comes to emails from retailers, sometimes it’s better to unsubscribe. The purpose of their emails is to get you to make impulse purchases. Once in a while, of course, is fine but it can be beneficial to either unsubscribe or to change your settings so you aren’t receiving these emails as frequently.
2. Log Out: It sounds like a no-brainer, but, log out of accounts from your phone or other devices. If you aren’t logged in, it becomes more difficult to make impulse purchases, especially when you’re scrolling aimlessly on lunch breaks at work!
3. Create Zero Spending Days: Instead of buying lunch every day at work, try bringing lunch with you most days and only buy food once or twice a week. If you need a little reminder, set a schedule in your phone and create alerts to keep you on track. Even with morning coffees, treat yourself once or twice a week to buying coffee and then bring your own from home the rest of the week.

Are Your Sheets Hurting You While You Sleep?

Shaker Run - Monday, June 04, 2018

At the end of a long, busy day the last thing we think about is what the cotton sheets and pillowcases on our bed can do to our hair and skin. Many cotton blends we adorn our beds with are equipped with moisture-wicking technology which sounds great, but, sometimes it takes too much moisture that our hair and skin actually benefit from.

How Cotton Sheets Might Be Hurting You

While it feels nice against our skin, especially as we head off to dreamland, cotton is not the best material for your sleeping routine. Cotton and cotton blend materials are created to wick moisture away from your body, which makes them ideal for gym apparel or an afternoon spent in the sun. But, when it wicks moisture from your body for a prolonged period of time, such as sleeping, it can cause your hair to become coarse or brittle. It can also cause premature fine lines or even acne.

If you have experienced any of these issues, it could be worth it to switch your pillowcases and bedsheets with a material, such as satin, that still feels nice against your skin but does not do as much harm. Take some time to go through your linen closet and decide what sets can stay and which should be replaced.

Stress Levels can be Increased by a Messy Closet

Shaker Run - Thursday, April 19, 2018

While getting ready for your day, or packing for a trip, have you ever noticed that your stress level increases while you’re in your closet? If you answered anything other than a firm “no”, your stress could potentially be due to an unorganized or cluttered closet. The stress hormone known as cortisol is one of our worst enemies, reduce your level by straightening up your closet (or anything other messy area in your home)!

Reduce the Clutter in Your Closet

It may sound counter intuitive, but, start by completely emptying your closet. Try to keep your stress level in check during this moment, because once you’re finished, it will have been worth it. Go through every piece that once lived in your closet and ask yourself if you really need it, can you survive without it, and when was the last time it saw the light of day (or an evening out). This task may also include the need to try a few things on and ensuring everything still fits. If it doesn’t fit like it once used to, the chances of it fitting like you imagine it should are fairly slim.

Once you have your “keep pile” it’s time to refill the closet. But, before you go any further, keep in mind that the ultimate goal here is organization. Put all of your shoes, boots, sandals (or any other form of footwear) to one side of the closet based on your preference. Some find it easier to have them lined up from tallest to shortest while others prefer the ones least used tucked away in the back with the most worn pair(s) up front.

Now it’s time to organize your clothes, how they are organized is your personal preference. Most find the least stressful way to organize clothes is by category: dress pants, dress shirts, sweaters, activewear, etc. You may want to keep in mind how the clothes will hang in the closet and if longer items have the potential to block something such as taller boots. If you feel as though this may trigger your cortisol hormone, find an alternative before getting further into the project.

Perhaps your stress level isn’t impacted due to clutter in your closet, but, more so because of the size of the closet. The residents at Shaker Run Apartments have the pleasure of enjoying many of our amenities including walk-in closets in their spacious apartment. Become More Organized With These 10 Tips

Shaker Run - Thursday, April 05, 2018

Having a home that is cluttered and unorganized is a terrible habit that needs to be broken. Some find it easiest to become more organized when they’re doing their spring cleaning since they are already going through their belongings and tossing out unwanted items. But, the organization shouldn’t stop once the spring cleaning is over with; keep up with it with these 10 tips!

10 Ways to Become Better Organized

1. Storage Boxes: Even something so small can have a major impact on your space. Storage boxes, bins, or baskets serve multiple purposes. They create an appealing look for your home while also putting things out of sight.
2. Furnishings with Doors: If at all possible, decorate your home with door-fronted furniture. Television stands, armoires, cabinets, and so many more pieces of furniture can act as a storage container without creating an eyesore.
3. Bed Risers: One issue that many renters may face is running out of storage and trying to find a way to create more storage. One way to do so is utilizing bed risers, especially in a child’s room or a guest room. This gives the ability to store items under the bed while still allowing them to be accessible.
4. Key Hooks: Are you (or someone else in your home) always misplacing your keys? Try a key hook for the entryway! There are many options available now from sleek and modern to options that boast a lot of personality – either way, it will do its job and keep your keys where they belong!
5. Cord Organizers: Whether the cords are under the desk in your office, bunched up with your entertainment center, or next to an end table, they can be quite unsightly! Cord organizers act as cover for your cords, while keeping them organized and out of eyesight. It also helps keep little fingers away too!
6. Table Skirt: If your end table has a shelf underneath that you use for storage (or even the floor beneath it), topping it with a table skirt brings a cute addition to the room while still keeping the table functional.
7. Hamper with a Lid: If you keep your clothes hamper out in the open, using one with a lid not only covers all of your dirty clothes but also helps keep your space looking neat and organized.
8. Multi-Tasking Furniture: Furniture that serves multiple purposes is a must for those who require a lot of storage but desire pieces that serve another function. Pieces such as storage ottomans or storage beds are the perfect way to incorporate multiple functions.
9. Mail or Coupon Box: Many of us are in the habit of tossing mail on the counter with the idea of going through it later, or even the coupons we get while grocery shopping. Rather than leaving it out, purchase a decorative box that can hide it for you until you have time to sort it out.
10. Space Saver Bags: Vacuum-sealed bags give you the opportunity to store more items than usual under your bed or in a closet. This can be beneficial for seasonal items like heavy, bulky, sweaters that typically take up a lot of space.

These are only 10 of the organization tips we have for you and we hope you find them to be helpful in your home. Maybe you’ve mastered the necessary organization skills to keep your home neat and tidy and you simply need more space. Shaker Run Apartments is the place for you! We offer a variety of floor plans best suited for you and your needs. From one bedroom to three bedrooms, you’ll be happy to call us home. Schedule a tour today!
