2 Easy DIY Holiday Decorations to Try This Year

Shaker Run - Tuesday, December 01, 2015

Looking for some quick and easy ways to spruce up your Shaker Run apartment’s holiday décor? Here are two simple and affordable DIY projects that you can complete in no time at all!

Bookshelf Ornament Hangers

What you’ll need:

  • Ribbon
  • Small ornaments – Use however many you need depending on what works with the width of your shelves. I would plan on spacing them between 6 and 10 inches apart, again depending on whatever looks best.
  • Removable adhesive hooks

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Cut your ribbon in strips of all different lengths (or the same length if you prefer a more even look). Remember, they will be looped in half, so measure accordingly.
  2. Thread the ribbon through the top of the ornament, where you’d normally put the ornament hook. Tie the ribbon in a knot to close the loop and trim off any excess.
  3. Secure your removable hooks to the front of the shelf you want to hang them from. You can put them on the front edge, or on the top edge to hide the hooks better.
  4. Hang your ornaments on the hooks.

*Tip: This can also be done on your mantel, cabinets, or over a doorway! Be creative!

Hanging Chair Decorations

What you’ll need:

  • Wide ribbon
  • Pinecones (you’ll need three or four for each decoration)
  • Silver spray paint
  • Removable adhesive hooks

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Spray the pinecones silver and let them dry.
  2. Cut your ribbon into fairly long strips, about the length of the backs of your chairs.
  3. Tie the pine cones to the ends of the ribbons.
  4. Tie three to four of the ribbons together at the unused end.
  5. Attach the removable hooks to the top of the backs of your chairs and hang the ribbons on them.

You can find most of the supplies needed for these projects at your local dollar store, as well as stores like Walmart and Michael’s. Have fun!
